Simulations of Supersonic Turbulence in Molecular Clouds: Evidence for a New Universality
نویسندگان
چکیده
We use three-dimensional simulations to study the statistics of supersonic turbulence in molecular clouds. Our numerical experiments describe driven turbulent flows with an isothermal equation of state, Mach numbers around 10, and various degrees of magnetization. We first support the so-called 1/3-rule of Kritsuk et al. (2007a) with our new data from a larger 2048 simulation. We then attempt to extend the 1/3-rule to supersonic MHD turbulence and get encouraging preliminary results based on a set of 512 simulations. Our results suggest an interesting new approach to tackle universal scaling relations and intermittency in supersonic MHD turbulence.

Supersonic turbulence and structure of interstellar molecular clouds.
The interstellar medium provides a unique laboratory for highly supersonic, driven hydrodynamic turbulence. We propose a theory of such turbulence, test it by numerical simulations, and use the results to explain observational scaling properties of interstellar molecular clouds, the regions where stars are born.
متن کاملThe Average Magnetic Field Strength in Molecular Clouds: New Evidence of Super–Alfvénic Turbulence
The magnetic field strength in molecular clouds is a fundamental quantity for theories of star formation. It is estimated by Zeeman splitting measurements in a few dense molecular cores, but its volume–averaged value within large molecular clouds (over several parsecs) is still uncertain. In this work we provide a new method to constrain the average magnetic field strength in molecular clouds. ...
متن کاملVelocity Field Statistics in Star-forming Regions. I. Centroid Velocity Observations
The probability density functions (pdfs) of molecular line centroid velocity fluctuations, and of line centroid velocity fluctuation differences at different spatial lags, are estimated for several nearby molecular clouds with active internal star formation. The data consist of over 75,000 CO line profiles divided among twelve spatially and/or kinematically distinct regions. These regions range...
متن کاملHigh resolution simulations of supersonic turbulence in molecular clouds
We present the results of three-dimensional simulations of supersonic Euler turbulence with grid resolutions up to 1024 points. Our numerical experiments describe nonmagnetized driven turbulent flows with an isothermal equation of state and an rms Mach number of 6. We demonstrate that the inertial range scaling properties of turbulence in this strongly compressible regime deviate substantially ...
متن کاملDensity Probability Distribution Functions in Supersonic Hydrodynamic and Mhd Turbulence
We study the probability distribution function (PDF) of the mass density in simulations of supersonic turbulence with properties appropriate for molecular clouds. For this study we use Athena, a new higher-order Godunov code. We find there are surprisingly similar relationships between the mean of the time-averaged PDF and the turbulent Mach number for driven hydrodynamic and strong-field MHD t...
